Which Painting Techniques Should You Know Like the Back of Your Hand?

ARTMiE — Which Painting Techniques Should You Know by Heart?
  1. Underpainting

We start with the initial layer of paint applied to the canvas. Creating an underpainting is a simple technique that has a big impact on the rest of the painting. If you apply the underpainting correctly, it creates an ideal foundation for adding further shading and unifying the colors in the image. It can also suggest the impression the painting will create. Use an blue underpainting when you want to create a cool impression. To create a warm impression (a desert, summertime), use a yellow or purple underpainting, which will also make shading the image easier.

This framework for your painting will guide you as you apply individual layers and let you focus more closely on each element in the image. It’s important to work from thin layers to thick ones, especially when using slow-drying paints.

2. Creating Structure (Building Up Texture)

Do you know what can give a painting just the right touch? You can create a so-called 3D texture not only with a thick layer of paint and a palette knife. Some artists use, for example, eggshell or sand.

Give your painting a new dimension with texture.

3. Dry Brush Painting (Dry Brushing)

Painting with a dry brush may not be the best-known technique, but many people love it, and it’s also quite simple. You can learn the technique quickly and use it to create real works of art. Start by choosing a suitable brush, preferably a synthetic one, and oil paint. The basic idea is to use a brush that you dry thoroughly with a napkin, absorbing most of the oil. Then apply the remaining paint to the canvas in a thin layer.

This method makes shading and creating subtle color transitions easier. Another advantage is that it dries quickly. The finished painting resembles a drawing made with a pencil or charcoal, and the results are truly realistic paintings.

4. Removing Paint (Sgraffito)

Removing paint can be just as important as applying it. Sgraffito is the term for removing paint before the painting has completely dried. This is useful, for example, when painting hair, scratches, grass, and similar details. You can use almost any pointed object for this, such as the end of a brush.

5. Using Medium

Mediums are liquids that can be added to paint to change its consistency, drying time, and texture. Different mediums can make a painting glossy or matte.

Browse our professional mediums. You’re sure to find some that catch your eye.

Finally, remember that choosing the right brushes for your work is very important. You can choose from brushes in various shapes and with different types of bristles. The important thing is to try them out and see which ones work best for you.

Synthetic brushes are the most versatile and can be used with different types of paints. For preparing a ground, I recommend using larger, flat or wider brushes. Thinner brushes help you finish the details. For rounded shapes and soft, smooth transitions, I recommend round and fan brushes.

Remember to take good care of your brushes, and read more about brush care.

If you want to paint like a true artist, don’t be afraid to give it a try. The early stages can feel uncertain and are far from easy. Every artist has been through this. What matters is that painting brings you joy and helps you forget the worries of everyday life.
