How to Draw a Butterfly?

As usual, we'll sketch out the motif first. This will make drawing much easier and help you feel more confident. Take a moment to picture the butterfly you're going to draw. Think about its pose, pattern, and composition.

If you're planning to depict a specific species, a reference image is essential. Today, though, we'll draw a simple butterfly. You can also choose one from the image below.

A butterfly can be divided into two symmetrical halves. So start by lightly drawing a center line. Draw a small head and a body with an elongated abdomen. Then draw two forewings (upper wings) and two hindwings (lower wings).

Roughly sketch all the parts listed above. This loose sketch doesn't need to be perfect; we can refine it later. Even symmetrical objects can have irregularities. The human face is one example. This is called approximate symmetry. To make the drawing more interesting, position the butterfly so that one pair of wings faces the viewer.

Next, refine the outlines of the wings, eyes, and antennae… you don't need to be completely precise or detailed. Our goal today is to draw a simplified butterfly. Add an improvised wing pattern, using your imagination and different patterns you've seen on butterflies. The pattern should be more or less symmetrical, with the wings mirroring each other. Your pencil sketch is ready, so let's pick up our pens. With these Micron pens, you can create beautiful works of art.

We recommend size 0.2. Use it to easily sketch the general outlines of the upper part of our butterfly. The head and thorax have a “hairy” texture, so draw their outlines as a series of short strokes. Use a back-and-forth motion to create darker areas on the wings.

Small gaps remain between some of the strokes. This creates the illusion of texture. The veins on the wings are thin, so your strokes should be fine. You can use a dotted line here. Next, work on the hindwings and abdomen. Using the same approach, sketch the outlines and darken some areas of the wing pattern. Both sets of wings, upper and lower, should look like mirror images.

Next, take a size 0.1 pen and add hatching to the wings. The goal is to gently connect the contrasting areas. Also fill in the body (head, thorax, and abdomen) with short strokes and dots. The sides of the body will become slightly darker, giving the butterfly more volume. Your black-and-white butterfly is finished. Now let’s bring it to life with color.

Use a blue pen to add dots to the wings. The pattern on the forewings has a wide, curved shape. Cover one side with dots to create a transition from white to bright blue. Also surround the black spots on the hindwings with blue dots. Add a few to the butterfly’s body too, to create visual unity.

Add more dots in dark blue and purple. “Reinforce” the inner edges of the wings, the ones closer to the body, alternating between dark blue and purple. Dark blue dots create the illusion of depth and mimic a soft shadow. For the small sections of the wing pattern, choose one side of each section and add new dots there. The opposite wings should mirror this, so repeat the process on the other side.

And that’s it! Your butterfly is finished. How did yours turn out?
