Have You Tried Painting on Canvas Paper?

Canvas paper is heavyweight paper with a canvas texture, ideal for sketches, testing paints, and painting outdoors. Find out what to draw on it with and when you can use oil paints.
Canvas Paper: Paper with a Canvas Texture

In brief: Canvas-textured paper is heavyweight paper with a texture that imitates canvas. It is ideal for sketching and testing paints, brushes, and ideas before working on a real canvas, as well as for painting outdoors. You can also use oil paints on some types. Check the packaging label.

What is canvas-textured paper? Why should you try working on this paper? What can you draw and paint with on it?

What Is Canvas-Textured Paper?

Canvas-textured paper is heavyweight paper with a distinctive texture that imitates canvas. It is available in various thicknesses and compositions. The thickness determines how well it handles fluid paints (absorbency), while the composition determines whether you can also use oil paints on it or need to stick to dry drawing materials and water- and acrylic-based paints. Sometimes it is made like standard cellulose or cotton paper, and sometimes it is a very thin synthetic canvas coated with a layer of gesso (a white ground that isolates the canvas and gives it whiteness and strength).

The packaging will always indicate whether the paper can also be used with oil paints and which technique it is intended for. This type of paper is most commonly sold in A4 and A3 pads. Prices may vary depending on quality, but this paper will certainly be more affordable than canvas on stretcher bars or canvas board.

Why Should You Try It?

Why choose this paper? There are times when you may not be ready to start a large painting on canvas because your idea may not be fully developed, or you may be unsure how the technical part will work. To avoid unnecessary repainting and ruining an expensive stretched canvas if your first attempt doesn’t work out, paper with a canvas texture could be a good solution. You can sketch on it and test how certain paints, brushes, or palette knives behave, as well as different combinations of painting materials.

Sometimes you may also want to work with oil paints on paper because you simply like the combination of these two materials. You know that regular paper is not a suitable surface for oil paints. The paper absorbs the oil, and a yellow stain appears around the paint. Also, a piece made this way would not last long because the binder in oil paint would damage the paper over time. Still, there are times when you might want to quickly sketch something in oil paints or try out ideas and effects you’re unsure will work. In that case, paper with a canvas texture would be great to have. It may give you an idea of how it would look on canvas, without ruining a clean canvas.

It’s also ideal for painting outdoors. Of course, it’s easier to pack a pad of canvas-textured paper in your backpack with your oil paints than a stretched canvas.

What Can You Draw and Paint With on Canvas-Textured Paper?

When it comes to drawing, the possibilities are endless, and the results are interesting. Pencil, charcoal, ink, and pen will all behave quite differently than they do on smooth sketching paper. When you draw a line, it won’t be solid and continuous. Instead, the canvas texture will break it up, giving your drawing a delicate, playful look. You may run into a problem if you want to erase something from this paper, because the pigment settles into the texture and is almost impossible to erase. This is nothing to worry about, but it does mean you’ll need to “fix” mistakes another way.

We’ve already mentioned that you can use oil paints on this kind of paper only if the packaging says it is suitable for this technique. If not, stick to acrylic paints, tempera paints, and gouache. Watercolors may also be an option when the paper weight is higher (over 300 g/m²).
